Commentary: With both home teams losing outright on Sunday, everything seemed to even out in the playoff race. Chris B. Corey played the conservative route last week, betting all four games, and remained tied for the lead. But because of the Giants winning, everyone is still within earshot of first place, making this weekend very crucial.

Bonus Commentary: A lot of this week’s betting strategy will also be taken into account with possible Super Bowl bets in mind. The following are the rules for betting the Super Bowl. Please note that we will be using the point spread from the Wednesday BEFORE the Super Bowl as the official line (January 30), not next Wednesday’s line (since there is a week off in between). Thus, next week there will be an email update, but no point spread. And now the rules:

Rule 10 Part III

Playoffs will be bet the same as the Regular Season, except for the Super Bowl:

Normal fine rules will apply.

For the Super Bowl, a franchise must bet either $100, $200, $300, $400 or $500 AND submit the following three (3) tiebreakers (in whole numbers, without ½ points or yards):

Actual winner of the game (without line)

By how many points (without line)

Total official offensive yardage of the winning team as reflected on the official NFL web site.

So, you can bet anywhere from $100-$500 on the Super Bowl, giving a majority of the teams a good chance to win or be in the top three. As stated before, the tiebreaker in the playoffs is not percentages, it comes down to these three tiebreakers (in order). The betting sheet the morning of the Super Bowl will detail all of these bets. You’ll see these rules again in the email before the week before the big game, but the ability to bet as much as $500 on the Super Bowl will no doubt affect strategy this week.

Your updated standings:

Chris B. Corey$400
Teddy KGB$300
The People’s Champ$200
Gordon Bombay$100
Blossom Russo-$100

Commentary: The Pittsburgh-Jacksonville push game kept Chris B. Corey, Teddy KGB, and The People’s Champ from having perfect weeks, and their different betting strategies produced various results in Week 1 of the playoffs. Gordon Bombay lost an additional $100 for late picks (cmon this is the playoffs!) and Blossom Russo fell $500 behind after only one week down and with only three weeks to go. Every franchise is packed together right now, but with the high spreads in the Divisional Playoff games, this is make or break week.

Playoff Vegas Odds

by The Executive Director

So here we are, playoff time. For the seven franchises on the outside looking in, the season is over. But it might be beneficial to pay attention to the playoff strategy. Less games to bet as the weeks go on, and those who fall behind must bet opposite the leaders. All five in the playoffs are back to $0, same betting rules apply until the Super Bowl. Percentages are no longer the tiebreaker (this will be explained Super Bowl week). Here’s a look at handicapping the playoff teams and there chances of winning it all.

Chris B. Corey: Came on strong towards the end of the year, but at times relied too much on Indianapolis and his man crush, Reggie Wayne.
Odds to win: 6-1

Teddy KGB: Tardiness almost cost him the playoffs and having his wife make his picks for him might not bode well for him in crunch time.
Odds to win: 10-1

Blossom Russo: Hanging on by a thread, the Weasel won the outright title, yet was basically even for the last seven weeks of the season. He might be the hungriest of the playoff teams, hungry not only for cash, but also for pizza (scams) and burritos.
Odds to win: 3-1

Gordon Bombay: Much like Blossom Russo, Gordon Bombay relied on his lead the second half of the year, almost stumbling down the stretch. His system of betting four games on many weeks will be tested once there are a limited amount of games to bet. And he lives with Don Mattingly, which can only deter him from concentrating on picking winners.
Odds to win: 7-1

The People’s Champ: The odds on favorite going into the postseason, The People’s Champ weathered the storm late in the regular season to sneak into the playoffs. He might be the most dangerous of any of the teams, since his winning goes in streaks. As long as he starts out hot, he won’t be caught (like his Yankees did last season, losing to the Tribe in four games).
Odds to win: 2-1

2. Teddy KGB$1,200

3. Karl Farbman$1,100
4. Mr. Marbles$1,000

Commentary: Week 17 offered a lot of high drama, with two of the division titles, the overall winner, and both wild cards up for grabs. The People’s Champ missed out on his wild card bet, but still backed into the playoffs. Gordon Bombay barely lost the overall title, but was hampered by a Seattle-Atlanta push. Blossom Russo took home first place for the regular season. Teddy KGB, who not only had late bets, but also lost $500 (-$600 total for the week), still snuck into the playoffs. Karl Farbman and Mr. Marbles were left wondering what could have been, as they missed playoff spots by $200 and $100 respectively.

Regular season payouts:
Blossom Russo: East Division Champion and Overall Champion = $180
Chris B. Corey: North Division Champion = $135
Gordon Bombay: West Division Champion = $135

(note: all payouts will be made after the Super Bowl)

3. Karl Farbman$1,200
4. Mr. Marbles$700

Commentary: The big shuffle this week was in the West Division, where The People’s Champ lost $500 and his one week reign at the top, and Gordon Bombay took a commanding lead going into the final week of the regular season. Thanks to a late Jason Hanson field goal, Chris B. Corey is hanging on to his lead by a thread in the North. Blossom Russo has locked up his division, but leads the overall standings by a slight margin. It’s anyone’s game going into Week 17. In the wild card race, Mr. Marbles lost $500 and all but eliminated himself from the playoffs. Karl Farbman needs a lot to happen in front of him to sneak into the postseason. Interesting betting strategy will come into play this week. If you’re behind, not only do you have to make correct picks, but they have to be opposite of the leaders (which will come into play in the playoffs as well). On top of that many teams have nothing to play for this week if they have already clinched their spot in the playoffs. A lot depends on how long coaches play their starters (come on Dungy, leave Peyton in the entire game for the love of God!). Also, Gordon Bombay and The People’s Champ both have their wild card bets remaining. Fat chance that Gordon Bombay will bet his, knowing that if he wins $500, he can’t be caught for the division. But The People’s Champ either has to bet his wild card, or make regular bets and hope that Gordon Bombay loses money in order to have a chance at the division crown.
