The Top Ten: Week 13

by The Executive Director

Commentary: There wasn’t a ton of shakeup in The Top Ten this week. The potential playoff teams seem to be distancing themselves from the rest of the pack. With five weeks to go, the next two weeks are crucial for many franchises. It will determine who is competing for a division crown, who is fighting for a playoff spot, and who is a cellar dweller.

(current total; last week’s ranking)

1. The Beard of Zeus ($2,000; 3)
The Beard takes over the number one spot after an impressive week. He has a $1,000 lead on his division and his wild card bet available. Looking good with five weeks left.

2. Mr. Marbles ($1,900; 1)
Though Marbles lost the overall lead, the rest of his division faltered. He is the only member of the South Division to make The Top Ten this week. Marbles has a $1,600 lead on the rest of his division.

3. Bayonnaise ($1,300; 5)
The see-saw battle continues in the East. This week Bayonnaise takes over the lead.

4. Karl Farbman ($1,200; 4)
Farbman is not close behind the ‘Naise, but loses the lead and $300 on the week. The one advantage (or disadvantage depending on how you look at it) Farbman has for the divisional race is his wild card still on the shelf.

5. Ron Mexico ($1,200; 2)
A rough week for Ron, as he loses $500 and goes from being on the cusp of the overall lead to $800 off the pace. He also had a prime opportunity to increase his lead on the rest of the West.

6. Mr. DeBlasis ($1,100; 6)
Lost in the Bayonnaise/Farbman battle, Mr. DeBlasis has quietly put himself just $200 behind the East leader. Given his past successes, DeBlasis is sure to be a factor as we enter the last month of the season.

7. Babe ($1,000; 7)
Babe has kept himself in the divisional race and has his grip on a playoff spot if the season ended today. Can he make a late-season run at the Beard of Zeus?

8. Boss Hardigan ($600; 8 )
Hardigan lost $300 but actually gained on Ron Mexico. He’s also in playoff position, but a herd of possible contenders are charging behind him.

9. Slovy Maximus ($400; NR)
The Slov lost three out of his four bets and currently holds the last playoff spot due to a winning percentage tiebreaker.

10. Gordon Bombay ($400; NR)
Bombay is making sure his hat will be in the ring come the last few weeks of the season. He’s right on the edge of the playoffs and is now within striking distance of the division yet again.

The Top Ten: Week 12

by The Executive Director

Commentary: In Week 11, the rich got richer and several franchises below the equator began their respective playoff pushes. Four men bet their wild card and all four won (Mr. DeBlasis, Teddy KGB, Boss Hardigan, Babe). At the top, the current division leaders all won $500 last week, and some seem to be pulling away. With the short week to bet this week, this could be a make-or-break type of week for franchise hovering around mediocrity.

(current total; last week’s ranking)

1. Mr. Marbles ($1,800; 1)
The pace car right now, Marbles won another $500 and maintains the overall lead, but the rest of the league is nipping at his heels.

2. Ron Mexico ($1,700; 3)
Ron is making a great run. Another $500 week and now has a $800 lead in the division. The top four teams in the West have all used their wild card bets, so his lead is the safest in the FMFL right now.

3. The Beard of Zeus ($1,700; 4)
The Beard keeps on churning, fueled by sauerkraut and beef jerky. He’s got a $800 lead in the North.

4. Karl Farbman ($1,500; 5 )
Farbman won $500 to retake the lead in the East, which is the only division with even two franchises over $1,000 (the East has three).

5. Bayonnaise ($1,400; 2)
The ‘Naise would figure that +$100 would be a decent week. But with everyone else’s successes, he lost the lead in the East and slipped down the Top Ten. He’s the leading Wild Card team as of now.

6. Mr. DeBlasis ($1,000; 7)
Kind of a weird week for DeBlasis. He won his wild card bet, but lost his other wager and also had late bets. +$500 on the week. He’s in contention for sure, but didn’t gain a ton of ground on the rest of the field.

7. Babe ($900; 9)
Babe won his wild card bet but lost his other wager, netting $600 on the week. He’s still $800 behind the Beard.

8. Boss Hardigan ($900; NR)
Hardigan went from slumping to slump-busting with a $1,000 week. He jumped over a few contenders in the West and is now only $800 out of the division lead.

9. Teddy KGB ($700; NR)
Just like that, Teddy is back in it. A huge $1,000 week (including a wild card bet win) and he’s up to second place in the South. If the season ended today, he’d be in the playoffs.

10. Kiko Garcia ($600; 10)
Kiko has weathered the storm and is close to playoff position. However, with his wild card bet already spent, he could be leapfrogged in the final weeks.

The Top Ten: Week 11

by The Executive Director

Commentary: Overall, the league has been doing a little bit better in the past few weeks. All of the would-be playoff teams are in the positive, and we are returning back to the normal projection of the Funny Money season. Traditionally, the final playoff spot is around $1,000, with the overall leader around $2,300. We could be headed that way with seven weeks to go and a ton of franchises with their wild card bets still on the shelf.

(current total; last week’s ranking)

1. Mr. Marbles ($1,300; 1)
Just a $100 week for Mr. Marbles, but he created some space between the rest of the South. He now has a $600 lead.

2. Bayonnaise ($1,300; 5)
Big boy Bayonnaise wins $500 and takes over the East! He’s tied for the overall lead and is on a huge run the last three weeks.

3. Ron Mexico ($1,200; 7)
In another division race that changed leaders, Ron Mexico won $500. That, paired with a bad week for Gordon Bombay, has given him a $800 lead in the West.

4. The Beard of Zeus ($1,200; 8 )
The biggest division disparity is still in the North, where the Beard leads the rest by $900.

5. Karl Farbman ($1,000; 2)
Farbman lost $100 and the lead in the East. Right now he sits atop the Wild Card standings, but needs a big week to get back in it.

6. The People’s Champ ($700; 3)
The Champ is still in the playoff mix as well, but is losing ground in the division with each passing week.

7. Mr. DeBlasis ($500; 6)
DeBlasis went “conservative” with a five-teamer. The result: one win, four losses. He’s now $800 back in the division, but has his hands on a playoff spot.

8. Gordon Bombay ($400; 4)
A big swing in the West. Bombay lost $500. What was a $200 lead is now a $800 deficit. A $1,000 swing leaves Gordie clinging to a playoff spot.

9. Babe ($300; NR)
Babe won $500 and would sneak into the playoff if the season ended today. Is this the beginning of a late-season run?

10. Kiko Garcia ($300; NR)
Kiko almost had a perfect week. He is on the outside looking in of the playoffs because of his poor winning percentage, so he’ll need to bring the noise in the coming weeks.
