The Postseason Report

by The Executive Director

Gentlemen – 2021 was another season that brought COVID changes and line swings, along with the usual unpredictable nature of the NFL betting market. It was also the first 18 week season in FMFL history, and the final week was particularly brutal, dropping down several franchises and allowing others to sneak into the playoffs. The final playoff spot was $800, which is slightly below the usual postseason standard.

Here’s a breakdown of how the league did as a whole each week:
Week 1: -$1,100
Week 2: -$5,100
Week 3: -$900
Week 4: +$2,800
Week 5: +$2,500
Week 6: $0
Week 7: -$2,100
Week 8: -$2,200
Week 9: -$6,700
Week 10: -$2,800
Week 11: -$3,500
Week 12: +$1,900
Week 13: +$5,700
Week 14: +$5,300
Week 15: -$900
Week 16: +$5,600
Week 17: +$8,800
Week 18: -$5,000

That’s a cumulative total of +$1,700.

Disclaimer: The following is a completely biased report of the 2021 FMFL season. The views, opinions, and observations that follow are those of the Executive Director and are completely subjective.

East Division

Blossom Russo
Current Total: -$2,200
Winning Percentage: 0.389
Fines: $300
Wild Card Bet: Week 12 – Buffalo – Won
Recap: The only thing that was consistent in Blossom’s season was underperforming. Even a winning wild card bet couldn’t get her out of a season-long rut.
Grade: D

Boss Hardigan
Current Total: $3,900
Winning Percentage: 0.667
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – LA Rams – Won
Recap: Boss Hardigan completed the greatest regular season in FMFL history, and had to pull out a few wins on the final Sunday to capture the overall regular season title. He’s primed for the playoffs, especially given how hot he was the final month.
Grade: A++

Chalky Studebaker
Current Total: $500
Winning Percentage: 0.561
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 10 – Tampa Bay – Lost
Recap: For most of the season, Chalky wasn’t much of a factor. But when you look at the final stats and his strong winning percentage, you realize he was just a game or two away from the playoffs. If his wild card bet would have gone his way, it could have turned his season around.
Grade: C+

Chris B. Corey
Current Total: -$900
Winning Percentage: 0.462
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 13 – Las Vegas – Lost
Recap: A few bright spots here and there couldn’t change Chris’ fate this year, and he faded in the final weeks.
Grade: C-

Kiko Garcia
Current Total: -$2,000
Winning Percentage: 0.438
Fines: $300
Wild Card Bet: Week 11 – Cleveland – Lost
Recap: Kiko’s dominance over the FMFL a few years ago seems like a distant memory after he finished another disappointing year. Fines, a losing wild card bet, and a poor winning percentage have Kiko ready to wipe the slate clean for 2022.
Grade: D

Shecky
Current Total: -$1,200
Winning Percentage: 0.450
Fines: $100
Wild Card Bet: Week 11 – Cleveland – Lost
Recap: Someone should disable Shecky’s keyboard next year so that he can’t bet Cleveland. If he didn’t do that, he might have been in postseason position.
Grade: D+

The Beard of Zeus
Current Total: -$3,300
Winning Percentage: 0.330
Fines: $100
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – Green Bay – Lost
Recap: For shame, The Beard, for shame. He spent the majority of the second half of the year in the cellar.
Grade: F

Yaz
Current Total: -$1,200
Winning Percentage: 0.486
Fines: $100
Wild Card Bet: Week 18 – Cincinnati – Lost
Recap: The final total doesn’t tell you Yaz actually had an outside chance at the playoffs, but he lost $1,100 in Week 18 and now on paper, he had the same year as Shecky.
Grade: D+

North Division

Bud Fox
Current Total: $1,100
Winning Percentage: 0.479
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – Cincinnati – Won
Recap: Bud quietly pulled himself up in the second half of the year and made the playoffs. His division was a runaway early in the year, but Bud overcame some tough weeks to gut it out and make the postseason.
Grade: B

Don Mattingly
Current Total: $1,500
Winning Percentage: 0.536
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: Don is in the playoffs after a great final six weeks of the season. He’ll look to carry that momentum into the next four weeks.
Grade: B+

Judge Smails
Current Total: $900
Winning Percentage: 0.558
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 13 – Miami – Won
Recap: Smails separated himself from the pretenders in November and December after nailing his wild card bet. He’s in the playoffs for the first time as a franchise owner.
Grade: B

Kenny Powers
Current Total: $3,200
Winning Percentage: 0.625
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – New England – Won
Recap: With such a gaudy total and winning percentage, it’s hard to say what Kenny Powers could have done better in 2021. Yet, he couldn’t finish off a big comeback to win the division in Week 18 and will be out for blood in the playoffs.
Grade: A

Neon Boudeaux
Current Total: $200
Winning Percentage: 0.526
Fines: $100
Wild Card Bet: Week 18 – Kansas City – Lost
Recap: Neon was the poster boy of conservative betting until the final week of the season, when he went big and lost $1,000, going cold at the worst possible time. There’s always next year, but he may have to rethink his game plan.
Grade: C

Patrick Bateman
Current Total: -$300
Winning Percentage: 0.477
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: Bateman surged in the last two weeks of the year to make up for a rough 2021 that found him way off of the playoff race.
Grade: C

T-Ferg
Current Total: $3,300
Winning Percentage: 0.636
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: T-Ferg set the pace in the North all year long, and if not for Boss Hardigan’s record setting year, he would have been the lead story in the FMFL. He finished the job for the division crown in the last week of the season and will be dangerous in the playoffs.
Grade: A+

The Big Hurt
Current Total: -$300
Winning Percentage: 0.389
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 10 – Philadelphia – Won
Recap: It’s a minor miracle that TBH was even this close, seeing that he won 39% of his game. It seemed that he went conservative at the wrong times and had some brutal weeks that ultimately sunk his 2021 campaign.
Grade: C-

South Division

Bayonnaise
Current Total: -$800
Winning Percentage: 0.406
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 15 – Buffalo – Won
Recap: For a moment, there was a glimmer in Bayonnaise’s eye that signaled a possible run to glory in the final weeks. That moment passed and he’ll have to reset for next season.
Grade: C-

Biff Tannen
Current Total: $700
Winning Percentage: 0.519
Fines: $200
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: All in all, a solid rookie season for Biff. However, when you finish $100 out of the playoffs and have $200 in fines, there are lessons to be learned…
Grade: B

Gordon Bombay
Current Total: -$1,300
Winning Percentage: 0.469
Fines: $200
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – Green Bay – Lost
Recap: The rest of the South pulled away from Gordon as the season wore on, and his Week 16 wild card bet loss was the final nail in the coffin.
Grade: D+

Karl Farbman
Current Total: $1,700
Winning Percentage: 0.538
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: Farbman turned around his 2021 season after an up-and-down first half, and closing strong gave him the South title. Now he carries his postseason experience and the expectations that come with it until the next round.
Grade: A-

Karl Hungus
Current Total: -$300
Winning Percentage: 0.447
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 12 – Buffalo – Won
Recap: Hungus lead the South division at the halfway mark, and even won his wild card bet, but the season proved to be too long for him as his performance dropped off down the stretch.
Grade: C-

Luther Lavay
Current Total: $800
Winning Percentage: 0.598
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 3 – Las Vegas – Lost
Recap: Luther must be looking back on the year wondering how he hit nearly 60% but didn’t win the division, and actually backed into the playoffs after losing $500 in the final week. He’ll be interesting to watch in the playoffs.
Grade: B

Rick Moranis
Current Total: -$3,300
Winning Percentage: 0.370
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 18 – Atlanta – Lost
Recap: Rick considered donating his unused wild card bet to charity in Week 18, but decided to blow it on the Falcons instead.
Grade: F

Waldo Geraldo Faldo
Current Total: -$800
Winning Percentage: 0.393
Fines: $100
Wild Card Bet: Week 11 – Philadelphia – Won
Recap: Waldo underperformed this season and had far too many -$500 weeks to put together any sort of a run in the second half.
Grade: C-

West Division

Babe
Current Total: -$200
Winning Percentage: 0.554
Fines: $200
Wild Card Bet: Week 18 – Kansas City – Lost
Recap: Babe’s another franchise that must be looking back thinking about a few games that slipped away for him. He lost $1,000 in Week 18 and went from the brink of the playoffs to idling in obscurity.
Grade: C

Donnie Jeffcoat
Current Total: $500
Winning Percentage: 0.500
Fines: $200
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – LA Rams – Won
Recap: Donnie had a chance in Week 18 after a solid, balanced season when he pushed all the right buttons to put him in position, but it was not to be. He’s primed for a run in 2022.
Grade: C+

Larisa Oleynik
Current Total: -$900
Winning Percentage: 0.458
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 3 – Kansas City – Lost
Recap: Larisa went big early and dug herself a giant hole that she could never quite get out of, even though the division was relatively up for grabs.
Grade: D+

Mr. Marbles
Current Total: $500
Winning Percentage: 0.500
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 16 – Cincinnati – Won
Recap: Much like Donnie Jeffcoat, Marbles ran out of gas, losing $500 in Week 18 after a strong year.
Grade: C+

OJ
Current Total: $1,200
Winning Percentage: 0.491
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 17 – Green Bay – Won
Recap: OJ’s final six weeks were a roller coaster, with him dropping down and seemingly out of the division race, only to jump back in the final two weeks, just barely missing out on the West crown.
Grade: B+

The Notorious ABT
Current Total: $1,300
Winning Percentage: 0.564
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 14 – Denver – Won
Recap: The ABT did just enough to win the division title with shrewd betting and timely wins down the stretch. As the sample size gets smaller in the playoffs, will his strategy change?
Grade: B+

The People’s Champ
Current Total: -$600
Winning Percentage: 0.455
Fines: $0
Wild Card Bet: Week 18 – Jacksonville – Won
Recap: The Champ was never a factor in 2021, and one wonders if he has gone from once-feared to a high pick in next year’s divisional draft.
Grade: C-

Thine
Current Total: $0
Winning Percentage: 0.500
Fines: $300
Wild Card Bet: Week 12 – Baltimore – Won
Recap: Thine got all the way back to even money and won 50% of his bets. If the season was a few weeks longer, he could have made some noise in the West.
Grade: C
