(Editor’s note: The 2024 winner, Shecky, has shared some words of wisdom as we kick off the 2025 season. His message is below.)

Winning the Funny Money Football League (FMFL) is not easy. In fact, it’s very difficult. Of the 32 current franchises, only 8 (25%) have their names engraved on the FMFL Champions Plaque. In the 18 seasons of the FMFL, 14 different people have won the league, with only 3 multiple year winners – The People’s Champ 3 times, and Karl Farbman and Kiko Garcia twice each. I asked myself: how come we’ve only got 8 former winners playing now?

I came up with the following three (3) reasons. First, 6 of the 14 people who’ve won (43%) have dropped out and are no longer in the FMFL. I’m sure there are various reasons why, including at least one person I know who passed away. Second, there was an unusually high number of dropouts – 6 – from last year’s participants, meaning 19% of our league is now filled with rookies, all seeking to add their name to the champions plaque in their first year in the league. Third, sports betting is a combination of knowledge, skill and varying degrees of LUCK – both good luck and bad luck.

I’d like to think that for several years, I was a victim of more BAD luck than GOOD luck. Games that I thought I had won turned into bad losses at in the end. Many of those games were a result of betting on my hometown favorite, the Cleveland Browns, and we all know their winning record lately. So reluctantly, I chose to not bet them last year, and my winning percentage increased greatly. From the second worst all-time winning percentage of FMFL franchises, I climbed into the winner’s circle in one year. That was also due to my luck on the games I bet turning from bad to GOOD last year. Many games that it seems I had historically lost turned into winners last year. My luck turned around.

I tell you this because the same thing can happen to any of you 18 non-winners this year. You certainly need to have some knowledge and skill at betting, but I assure you that a large percentage of the difference between winning and losing NFL bets involves something you cannot control – LUCK. You need lots more GOOD luck than BAD luck to win it all. I had it last year. It could be YOUR turn this year. I wish you all GOOD LUCK in your FMFL bets!
