The Top Ten: Week 15

by The Executive Director

Commentary: With three weeks left, things are tightening up in the Funny Money. The overall leaderboard is close, but aside from the East, the divisional races could be basically decided if the leaders can have mediocre Week 15 bets. There is a gaggle of teams around the last wild card spot ($700), so it will be a dogfight coming down the stretch. Ten franchises still have their wild card bets, keeping guys like Will Cover and the Notorious A.B.T. within dangerous striking distance because they could jump $1,000 in any given week. 21 days from now, we’ll know the nine that will go onto postseason glory.

(current total; last week’s ranking)

1. Mr. Marbles ($2,300; 1)
Life is good for Mr. Marbles. Even though he lost $100, he maintained the overall lead, and has a $2,100 advantage with three weeks left. The way things are going, me might shelf his wild card bet for 2010.

2. The Beard of Zeus ($2,200; 2)
The Beard was one Tampa Bay stop away from taking a commanding overall lead. Instead, he lost $100 and stays right behind Mr. Marbles. He’s up $1,000 in the North and still has his wild card bet.

3. Karl Farbman ($2,000; 4)
A big week for Farbman. He turned a $100 deficit into a $300 lead in the division. He’s $300 off the overall pace and can take control with a strong Week 15.

4. Ron Mexico ($1,800; 5)
Mexico’s roller coaster ride continues. Just when he seems to stumble, he comes back with a vengeance. A perfect week and he now leads the West by $800 with a mere three weeks left.

5. Bayonnaise ($1,700; 3)
Make no mistake, the ‘Naise has had a terrific season and should be able to coast into the playoffs with a good chance to win the East. But the more remarkable thing is NO FINES THIS ENTIRE YEAR so far. However, he does have the current record for Most Bets Placed at 11:58pm.

6. Babe ($1,200; 7)
Babe holds serve and stays in prime playoff position. He won $100 and currently holds the second wild card berth. If he wants to make a run at the North title, time is running out…

7. Kiko Garcia ($1,000; 9)
Kiko comes a live with a great week. Only a late bet fine kept him from a perfect week. If the season ended today, he’d be in the playoffs.

8. Boss Hardigan ($1,000; 8 )
It’s almost certain that at least one additional playoff team will come out of the West. They’ve been switching positions all season and now Hardigan seems to have a postseason berth in his grasp. Can he keep it up?

9. Larisa Oleynik ($700; NR)
For those who thought Larisa had liquefied and gone down the drain, disappearing from existence, you were wrong. Larisa is clinging to the last playoff spot (via tiebreaker) after a $500 week!

10. Mr. DeBlasis ($700; 6)
Rough week from DeBlasis. He went from controlling his playoff destiny to being on the outside looking in. Losing $500 dropped him into fourth in the East and it will be challenge for him to have any say in the fight for the division title.

The Top Ten: Week 14

by The Executive Director

Commentary: For the most part, things stayed the same after Week 13. The overall leader switched again, but other than that the league remained as it was last week. The Phoenix dropped his wild card, so now there are only ten franchises with their big bet left. A few of those with their wild card are slowly making a run at the playoffs, so a $1,000 week could shake up the postseason picture. In sad news, Face cannot pick a winner. Four weeks to go.

(current total; last week’s ranking)

1. Mr. Marbles ($2,400; 2)
Marbles recaptures the overall lead with a $500 week. More importantly, there are four weeks to go and he has a $2,000 lead on the rest of his division. He can almost seal up the division title with a solid Week 14.

2. The Beard of Zeus ($2,300; 1)
The Beard won $300, so he lost the overall lead. But his margin for error in the North is growing. He’s up $1,200 and still has his wild card bet.

3. Bayonnaise ($1,800; 3)
The best divisional race is in the East, where the ‘Naise kept rolling with a $500 week. He’s $600 off the overall lead…

4. Karl Farbman ($1,700; 4)
…but Farbman is right on his heels. He, too, had a $500 week and is just $100 behind Bayonnaise. Farbman currently holds the first wild card spot.

5. Ron Mexico ($1,300; 5)
Ron won $100 as not much changed in the West. He still maintains a $600 lead on the rest of the division, so anything can happen. If he could summon up a perfect week, it would put some distance between him and the West with three weeks to go.

6. Mr. DeBlasis ($1,200; 6)
Lost among the East divisional race is that Mr. DeBlasis is still within shouting distance. He’s $600 off the divisional pace, and would have the second wild card spot if the season ended today.

7. Babe ($1,100; 7)
Babe has maintained a steady pace over the last few weeks, and is in prime playoff position. Time is running out to make a run at the division, but one bad week and he could be on the outside looking in for the postseason.

8. Boss Hardigan ($700; 8 )
Hardigan has quietly positioned himself for a late-season run. Right now, he has the fourth wild card spot and is one solid week from passing Ron Mexico for the West.

9. Kiko Garcia ($600; NR)
The big winner in Week 13 was Kiko Garcia. He went 3-for-3 on his picks and leaped over the contenders to put himself into the last playoff spot. He’ll need to keep it up over the next few weeks, as eight franchises are within $500 of the last postseason berth.

10. Slovy Maximus ($500; 9)
Slovy is flying under the radar, but is also within reach of the West. Right now, he wouldn’t make the playoffs, but he should be in the mix down the stretch.
