Playoff Vegas Odds

After a roller coaster season, we are down to nine franchises in the playoffs. Amazingly enough, none of the franchises in the postseason have an experience in the FMFL Playoffs. That being said, the field is wide open. Some of the teams, like Yaz, T-Ferg, and Bummy, come in red hot from the last few weeks of the regular season. Others like Waldo Geraldo Faldo, Larisa Oleynik, and Mr. DeBlasis, need to overcome lackluster results in the final month of the year.

Anything is possible in the playoffs. At the end of four weeks, we’ll have a winner. The following are playoff odds to win the 2009 Funny Money Football Championship, posted at the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas on January 7, 2010:

Art Schlichter12 to 1
Babe9 to 2
Bummy4 to 1
Larisa Oleynik10 to 1
Mr. DeBlasis3 to 1
Rick Moranis1,000 to 1
T-Ferg13 to 1
Waldo Geraldo Faldo15 to 1

The Postseason Report

by The Executive Director

2009 Funny Money Football League

THE POSTSEASON REPORT

(Disclaimer: All of the opinions expressed throughout this report are completely subjective and are the personal views of the Executive Director.)

EAST

Postseason East

Boss Hardigan

Total: -$1,400
Finish: 6th in East
Winning Percentage: .461
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Philadelphia; Week 6 – Lost
Midseason Grade: C+

Comment: Hardigan showed promise the first few weeks of the season, but then fell off after losing his wild card. He got his winning percentage back up towards the end of the year, but it was too little, too late.

Grade: C-

Brian Piccolo

Total: -$1,000
Finish: 4th in East
Winning Percentage: .420
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 7 – Won
Midseason Grade: C-

Comment: Piccolo gained some steam with a half-dozen weeks to go, but at that point was so far behind that he couldn’t get back in the mix. However, he put did win his wild card bet and had no fines the entire year. He’ll look to make his move in 2010.

Grade: C+

Gordon Bombay

Total: -$1,000
Finish: 3rd in East
Winning Percentage: .443
Fines: $800
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 11 – Won
Midseason Grade: D

Comment: For some reason, Bombay didn’t have it this year. Usually a dominating presence in the Funny Money, Gordon hardly made a peep this year. He also had one week without picks, which is quite uncharacteristic for him.

Grade: C

Kimmy Gibbler

Total: -$1,300
Finish: 5th in East
Winning Percentage: .473
Fines: $600
Wild Card: Tennessee; Week 4 – Lost
Midseason Grade: D-

Comment: After digging himself a huge hole, Gibbler got his percentage and his total back up in the second half of the season to make ’09 somewhat respectable. After a huge 2008, this season was disappointing. But, he’ll be back with a vengeance next year.

Grade: C

Larisa Oleynik

Total: $2,000
Finish: 1st in East
Winning Percentage: .568
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Green Bay; Week 7 – Won
Midseason Grade: A-

Comment: In Larisa’s debut season, she got off to a fast start and never looked back. Considering that the rest of the East Division was downright awful, she kept an even keel and had everything locked up with a month to go in the season.

Grade: A-

Teddy KGB

Total: -$300
Finish: 2nd in East
Winning Percentage: .513
Fines: $0
Wild Card: New England; Week 13 – Lost
Midseason Grade: B+

Comment: For the second year in a row, Teddy fell victim to the second half swoon. At the midseason point, he was ready to make his move. Then in November and December, inconsistency and losing his wild card bet spelled doom for KGB.

Grade: C+

The Notorious A.B.T.

Total: -$2,600
Finish: 7th in East
Winning Percentage: .354
Fines: $200
Wild Card: New England; Week 15 – Push
Midseason Grade: D+

Comment: A rookie in the FMFL, the A.B.T. never seemed to get into any type of groove. He did make his mark in one respect – He now holds the record for the lowest single-season winning percentage (formerly held by the Beard of Zeus at .368).

Grade: D

NORTH

Postseason North

Art Schlichter

Total: $1,800
Finish: 2nd in North; Wild Card Berth
Winning Percentage: .628
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 8 – Lost
Midseason Grade: B-

Comment: Art came close to breaking the record for highest single-season winning percentage and was just a few bad beats out of winning the division. Despite losing his wild card bet, he still made the playoffs and hovered around $1,500 for most of the second half of the season.

Grade: A-

Babe

Total: $2,400
Finish: 1st in North
Winning Percentage: .618
Fines: $200
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 12 – Won
Midseason Grade: B+

Comment: With a strong final two weeks, Babe won the North Division. The only reason he didn’t get an A is because of his Week 17 tardiness. Being fined $100 in the last week of the season ended up costing him the overall title.

Grade: A-

Blossom Russo

Total: $200
Finish: 7th in North
Winning Percentage: .500
Fines: $200
Wild Card: Minnesota; Week 5 – Won
Midseason Grade: D

Comment: This was the first year that Blossom refrained from writing humorous emails to the Executive Director with his picks every week. This was the worst he has ever performed. Coincidence? I think not.

Grade: B-

Bummy

Total: $1,700
Finish: 3rd in North; Wild Card Berth
Winning Percentage: .571
Fines: $200
Wild Card: Green Bay; Week 16 – Won
Midseason Grade: B

Comment: A solid December, including a big wild card win in Week 16, put Bummy in position to challenge for the divisional crown. Though he fell a bit short, he will make his first postseason appearance.

Grade: A-

Karl Farbman

Total: $300
Finish: 6th in North
Winning Percentage: .500
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Pittsburgh; Week 16 – Push
Midseason Grade: C

Comment: Farbman struggled with consistency all season long, which culminated with a push on his wild card bet in Week 16. He finished the year exactly .500, but that won’t get it done in the FMFL.

Grade: B-

Mr. Marbles

Total: $1,000
Finish: 4th in North
Winning Percentage: .553
Fines: $0
Wild Card: New England; Week 13 – Lost
Midseason Grade: A-

Comment: Take out Week 13 in which Marbles lost $1,000, and he would have been right in the thick of things. But, he lost his wild card bet and set himself back from the pack. Kudos for a good late season run to give himself a chance in Week 17.

Grade: B+

The 21th Precinct

Total: $700
Finish: 5th in North
Winning Percentage: .475
Fines: $100
Wild Card: San Francisco; Week 17 – Won
Midseason Grade: C+

Comment: The Precinct waited too long to turn it on in 2009. He won $1,000 in the final week of the season, but he was too far behind to challenge for a playoff spot. Much like some of the other franchises in the North, he seemed to struggle each week when trying to put two correct bets together.

Grade: B

SOUTH

Postseason South

Chris B. Corey

Total: -$4,900
Finish: 7th in South
Winning Percentage: .462
Fines: $3,600
Wild Card: Dallas; Week 10 – Lost
Midseason Grade: D+

Comment: Set the record for most fines, lowest total, and being the biggest blowhard.

Grade: F

Love Doctor

Total: -$2,700
Finish: 6th in South
Winning Percentage: .371
Fines: $700
Wild Card: New England; Week 13 – Lost
Midseason Grade: C-

Comment: In the Love Doctor’s first season, he just couldn’t get on track. He forgot to bet one week and that paired with a wild card loss was too much for him to handle. Hopefully the good Doctor will be back in 2010.

Grade: D

Mr. DeBlasis

Total: $2,000
Finish: 3rd in South; Wild Card Berth
Winning Percentage: .598
Fines: $100
Wild Card: Jacksonville; Week 13 – Won
Midseason Grade: B-

Comment: After a few years of hanging around the cusp of the playoffs, Mr. DeBlasis finally made “the leap” this year. He stumbled in the neck-and-neck race for the division, but still made the playoffs. A good year all around.

Grade: A-

Slovy Maximus

Total: -$1,800
Finish: 5th in South
Winning Percentage: .440
Fines: $0
Wild Card: NY Giants; Week 14 – Lost
Midseason Grade: B-

Comment: Much like his brother (Boss Hardigan), Slovy didn’t have it in 2009. But he went down with the ship, losing his wild card on his beloved G-Men.

Grade: D+

The People’s Champ

Total: -$900
Finish: 4th in South
Winning Percentage: .485
Fines: $1,500
Wild Card: Cleveland; Week 17 – Won
Midseason Grade: C

Comment: $1,500 in fines. Pathetic. For the self-proclaimed “People’s Champ,” he’ll have a long road to regaining his title next season.

Grade: D+

Waldo Geraldo Faldo

Total: $2,100
Finish: 2nd in South; Wild Card Berth
Winning Percentage: .565
Fines: $100
Wild Card: New Orleans; Week 7 – Won
Midseason Grade: A-

Comment: Solid winning percentage, made his move midseason and will be in the playoffs. But, he had a historic collapse in Week 17, losing his divisional lead to Yaz (who he led by $1,800 with two weeks to go).

Grade: A-

Yaz

Total: $2,200
Finish: 1st in South
Winning Percentage: .618
Fines: $200
Wild Card: San Francisco; Week 17 – Won
Midseason Grade: B+

Comment: Yaz came out of nowhere down the stretch to steal the South Division title from Waldo and Mr. DeBlasis. He won $1,000, shot up the standings, and shocked everyone. Without a few weeks of falling asleep and forgetting to bet, he would’ve been a hair off of the pace for the overall title.

Grade: A

WEST

Postseason West

Bayonnaise

Total: -$400
Finish: 5th in West
Winning Percentage: .500
Fines: $900
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 7 – Won
Midseason Grade: B

Comment: The ‘Naise had an up and down year. He was in prime position with three weeks to go and promptly lost $500 for two consecutive weeks and then didn’t bet in Week 17. If he gets his fine money down, he could be a force to be reckoned with next year.

Grade: B-

Don Mattingly

Total: $900
Finish: 4th in West
Winning Percentage: .526
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 15 – Won
Midseason Grade: B+

Comment: Things were going swimmingly for Donnie Baseball, who won his wild card in Week 15 and looked as if we was going to coast into the playoffs. But then it all came crumbling down in Week 17. He lost $500 and was bounced from the postseason party. That being said, a solid year in his return to the league.

Grade: B+

Kenny Powers

Total: -$700
Finish: 6th in West
Winning Percentage: .452
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Indianapolis; Week 5 – Won
Midseason Grade: B

Comment: Kenny had flashes of brilliance this year, but struggled to break out of a funk around the midway point of the season. Extra points for calling the Executive Director, “Godfather,” in public this year.

Grade: B-

Rick Moranis

Total: $2,500
Finish: 1st in West; Overall Champion
Winning Percentage: .582
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Did Not Use
Midseason Grade: A

Comment: Do you believe in miracles? The league’s sorriest franchise before the season began, Rick rose up and won the overall championship. Next stop: the playoffs. Congratulations.

Grade: A

T-Ferg

Total: $1,900
Finish: 2nd in West; Wild Card Berth
Winning Percentage: .557
Fines: $0
Wild Card: Atlanta; Week 17 – Won
Midseason Grade: B+

Comment: A great rookie season for T-Ferg, who was Rick’s strongest opposition during the season. He looks to have this whole football gambling thing figured out. No fines throughout the year and he won his wild card bet in the last week of the seaosn.

Grade: A-

The Beard of Zeus

Total: $1,300
Finish: 3rd in West
Winning Percentage: .526
Fines: $600
Wild Card: Cleveland; Week 14 – Won
Midseason Grade: C-

Comment: Take out one week in which the Beard forgot to bet (-$600) and he would’ve been right there for the playoffs. A vast improvement in his sophomore season, whoever he engages in battle next year should be scared.

Grade: A-

The Phoenix

Total: -$1,600
Finish: 7th in West
Winning Percentage: .429
Fines: $800
Wild Card: Seattle; Week 12 – Won
Midseason Grade: C-

Comment: Another year, more fine money for the Phoenix. Thanks for the donation to the Funny Money Football Fund.

Grade: D+
